Big chain truck stops have staff on site all night, plus a store and restrooms. Many private yards are gated and quiet but have no staff at night. Neither fits every driver. Pick the one that fits your night.

- Park near the building, under a light, where cameras can see the truck.
- Back in, so you can pull straight out.
- Lock up. Windows up. Curtains closed.
- Keep cash, cards, and gear out of sight.
- Send someone your plan: the lot name, the town, and your live location.
- Walk with your keys in your hand and your phone charged.
- If a lot feels wrong, go. Trust that feeling and find the next stop.
